Gravesite Jericho Friends Meeting - Winchester
Noted events in his life were:
• Notes. Joshua Buckingham was the 7th of 9 children of James & Mary Jane (Chambers) Buckingham.
In
November of 1792 Joshua moved to Cane Creek, NC with his church
members. There he met Rachel Piggott. Before a year had past the couple
were married on 24 Oct 1793.
They had six known children, 5 girls and 1 boy:
1. Mary, 1798-1873 IN, m. Nathan Freeman, 5 ch 2. Margery, 1802-1883 IN, m. Moses Mendenhall, 3 ch 3. Rachel, 1804-unk, m. Enoch Cox, 2 ch 4. Thomas, 1805-aft 1840, m. Catherine Robinson, 8 ch 5. Sarah, 1814-unk, m. John H Farrens, 6 ch 6. Hannah, 1816-1869 IN, m. Amos Fry, 9 ch
All
of the family left Orange County, NC (again a group of church members)
and were living on 79.6 acres of farm land in Randolph County, IN by
August of 1826.
• Notes fromJericho
Friends Meeting Booklet. Joshua Buckingham purchased land in the
Jericho neighborhood (S1 T19N R14E) in 1826. There is a record that his
wife, Rachel, and daughters, Margery, Rachel, Sarah and Hannah were
received on certificate from Cane Creek MM, North Caroline on Sept 6,
1923 and that his son, Thomas was received a month earlier. There is
nothing in the minutes of the White River Meeting to indicate that
Joshua was also received nor his name mentioned in subsequent minutes.
It is possible that at the time he was out of favor with the Cane Creek
Meeting in NC. Joshua was related to the rest of the community on
arrival his wife was, having been a North Carolina Piggott. Little
else is known of the Buckingham Family. The young folks also quickly
complicated the relationships. Margery married Moses Mendenhall in
1825. Rachel married Enoch Cox; son of Jeremiah, in 1827, Thomas
married Catherine Roberson (Robinson) in 1833. Sally (Sarah) married a
Ferrens in 1935; and Hannah Buckingham married Amos Fry in December
1836. Later, Margery, a widow married John Pike. Thus it seems that the
Buckingham Family was comely and desirable. Joshua and Rachel died in
the early 1840s with ties to many of the families in the community.
They were laid to rest in the present Jericho burying-ground.
